Rural Modern
Sita Devi lives at the intersection of tradition and quiet change.
She works at their home-based setup together with her husband, balancing economic contribution with the emotional labour of motherhood. Her days move between work, care, and presence for her son, Karthik.
What stands out in her story is the respect she receives within her family — from her husband, her sister-in-law, and her mother-in-law.
Though the labour is heavy and the emotional load is real, she carries it with a sense of dignity and contentment. Her world reflects a gentler, evolving understanding of womanhood in rural India.
This completed story is the starting point of a larger exploration.
I plan to document more women whose lives sit at the edge of rural and modern realities — women negotiating work, autonomy, care, and identity in changing social landscapes.
Eventually, these individual stories will come together as a unified body of work studying how womanhood is being redefined across India’s rural and modern worlds.
